recE [Escherichia coli].


RecE (Escherichia coli strain K-12 substr. MG1655) is product of expression of recE gene.






FUNCTION: Is involved in the recE pathway of recombination. Has a strong preference for linear duplex substrate DNA and appears to be unable to initiate degradation from single-stranded breaks in DNA.

CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: Degradation of double-stranded DNA. It acts progressively in a 5' to 3' direction, releasing 5'- phosphomononucleotides.

SUBUNIT: Homotetramer.
