RAD50

Protein FULL name:

RAD50; ATP binding / nuclease/ zinc ion binding [Arabidopsis thaliana].

RAD50 (Arabidopsis thaliana) is product of expression of RAD50 gene.

FUNCTION: Implicated in double-strand breaks (DSBs) repair by non- homologous end joining (NHEJ). Involved in telomere maintenance. Involved in telomerase action on chromosome ends. Required during meiosis for both male and female gametophytic development, for pairing and synapsis of homologous chromosomes during the early stages of meiotic recombination, especially during the pachytene stage of the first division.

COFACTOR: Binds 1 zinc ion per homodimer (By similarity).

SUBUNIT: Homodimer (By similarity). Interacts with AtMRE11.

SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus (Probable). Telomere (Probable).

TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Widely expressed, predominantly in meristematic and reproductive tissues.

DOMAIN: The zinc-hook, which separates the large intramolecular coiled coil regions, contains 2 Cys residues that coordinate one molecule of zinc with the help of the 2 Cys residues of the zinc- hook of another RAD50 molecule, thereby forming a V-shaped homodimer. The two heads of the homodimer, which constitute the ATP-binding domain, interact with the MRE11A homodimer (By similarity).

SIMILARITY: Belongs to the SMC family. RAD50 subfamily.

SIMILARITY: Contains 1 zinc-hook domain.

NCBI GenPept GI number(s): 18402837
