Protein FULL name:meiotic recombination protein SPO11 isoform a [Mus musculus].Spo11 (Mus musculus) is product of expression of Spo11 gene. FUNCTION: Required for meiotic recombination. Mediates DNA cleavage that forms the double-strand breaks (DSB) that initiate meiotic recombination (By similarity). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus (By similarity). TISSUE SPECIFICITY: High levels are found only in the testis where expression is restricted primarily to meiotic germ cells. Not expressed in spermatogonia. Highest levels are found in pachytene spermatocytes. Very low levels are found in thymus, brain and oocytes of embryonic ovary. Not detected in adult ovary. DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Not detected at day 7 postpartum (dpp). Levels are low at 12 dpp but increase by 17 dpp. High levels are maintained throughout the remainder of testis development. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the TOP6A family.
